Honorary Heart of Sarajevo for Woody Harrelson
The festival will screen the iconic film "Welcome to Sarajevo" by British director Michael Winterbottom, in which Harrelson plays one of the lead roles. The film, which had its world premiere at Cannes in 1997 and screened that same year at the 3rd Sarajevo Film Festival, explores the role of journalists in the media coverage of the siege of Sarajevo and is based on the book "Natasha's Story" by journalist Michael Nicholson.
The screening will be held at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema.
"Woody Harrelson is one of those actors you believe in even the most unlikely roles, while at the same time you can easily imagine him as someone you hang out with every day. That extraordinary ease of presence on screen is actually one of the hardest things to achieve in front of a camera, and he pulls it off film after film. His talent, charisma and boldness are an inspiration to many future generations. It is an honour for us to present him with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo," said Jovan Marjanović, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival.
Woody Harrelson's career has been defined by numerous iconic films and series:
Cheers (1985–1993) — Emmy Award winner for his iconic role as Woody Boyd
The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) — Academy Award nomination for Best Actor
Natural Born Killers (1994) — Oliver Stone's film, one of his most recognisable roles
The Messenger (2009) — Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) — Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor
Triangle of Sadness (2022) — Ruben Östlund's Palme d'Or-winning film
Brothers (Apple TV+, 2026) — alongside Matthew McConaughey, premiering September 23rd
The 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival takes place from 14 to 21 August 2026 in Sarajevo.
