The Goat's Bridge (Kozija Ćuprija)
Tucked away in the dramatic, rocky canyon where the Miljacka River is at its narrowest, the Goat's Bridge stands proudly as the only fully preserved Ottoman-era bridge spanning the river. Built during the golden 16th century period along the legendary Imperial Road (Carska džada), this stone beauty embodies supreme architectural elegance. Carved mostly from white marble (hreša), it captivates onlookers with its slender arch and two distinctive circular openings that give it an illusion of weightlessness.
Even today, a veil of mystery surrounds its name; while some search for legends, others trace its origins to the nearby settlement of Jarčedoli, traditionally known for breeding goats. The oldest written testament to its splendor comes from the chronicler Mula Mustafa Bašeskija, who noted the construction of a stone wall extending from this very bridge all the way to Alifakovac in 1771. Today, the bridge offers a perfect, quiet escape from the city bustle—a place where history literally breathes beneath your feet.
PRO TIP: To experience the bridge at its finest, set off on foot or by bicycle along the shaded Dariva promenade (Ambassadors' Alley). Just a few kilometers from the bustling Baščaršija, a perfect blend of untouched nature, the soothing sound of rushing water, and pure history awaits you.
