A cathedral in Sarajevo’s cultural mix We stopped at Trg Fra Grge Martića while exploring the old part of Sarajevo. The main attraction here is the cathedral itself, which is nice to see, but there isn’t much else around the square. For us, the real interest is the location: this is one of the areas where you really notice Sarajevo’s mix of cultures, with Catholic churches, mosques and different architectural influences all close together. It’s worth a stop while walking around the Old Town.
Trg Fra Grge Martića, located in Sarajevo, is one of the historical squares named after Fra Grgo Martić, a prominent Franciscan clergyman, writer, and poet from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Fra Grgo Martić (1822-1905) was a Franciscan who played a significant role in the cultural and literary life of Bosnia in the 19th century. He contributed to education and cultural activities in Bosnia, particularly producing works on South Slavic languages and literature. The square is situated in an area containing important structures from Sarajevo's Austro-Hungarian era urban fabric. Along with the surrounding buildings, it reflects the historical urban structure of Sarajevo, bearing the traces of its diverse religious and cultural communities.
A beautiful mosque where prayers are held... and it has a section for women.
