30 years after the war, it would be time for this campus to finally start looking like a space where students can spend their free time socializing, getting to know each other, studying, etc. The university library has been under construction for 4 years... that's not even in the movies.
This is the university campus we saw from the outside while touring Sarajevo. The University of Sarajevo was founded in 1949 and holds an important place in the city's educational and cultural life. The area where the campus is located is quite lively and blends beautifully with the surrounding urban fabric. The sculptures in the garden and the details in the open space are also striking from the outside and add a unique atmosphere to the campus, although it seems to have become somewhat neglected lately. I know that the University of Sarajevo has an important place in the city's educational and cultural life. We didn't have the opportunity to go inside and tour the campus, but even from the outside, you can feel the bustling student life of the area. If you happen to be passing by while touring the city center, it's worth it.
The complex, which can accommodate several thousand soldiers, covers about 30 hectares between the neighborhoods of Pofalići and Marijin Dvor.
It was designed by Karlo Paržik and Ludwig Huber in the Neoclassical style with Secession elements. The outer buildings contained sleeping quarters for the soldiers and the central area was reserved for officers, headquarters, horse stables, storage areas….
At the end of World War II the complex was named after Maršal Josip Broz “Tito” and his statue, made by the famous Croatian sculptor, Antun Augustinčić, was placed in front of the barracks. Even today, those who adore Tito as a figure, and for his deeds, place flowers in front of this monument on May 4, which is the anniversary of his death.
After the last war, a large portion of the grounds were made available to the University of Sarajevo. It later became home to other facilities, including the National and University Library of BiH, the Oriental Institute….
