This facility takes up 7, 000 m2 and was built as part of Skenderija, a cultural and sports center, which first opened on November 29, 1969.
Before the last war, Dom Mladih served as the center of youth culture in Sarajevo. Various clubs related to literature, music, drama, film, art… used to have gatherings here that were attended by tons of young Sarajevans. Such events gave them an opportunity to try out different art forms and to have a good time.
Cultural and art events were regularly held in Dom Mladih’s large main hall (dance hall) and it was here that many local bands first got started on the music scene. Dom Mladih also played a huge role in creating Sarajevo’s famous pop-rock movement.
Dom Mladih’s lower level was home to the disco club, Kaktus, which was the most popular place to go out in Sarajevo for many years.
During the last war, in May 1992, Dom Mladih was hit by a grenade and set aflame, which caused significant damage. Nevertheless, festivals, concerts, exhibits, etc. were still held in the burned out interior.
A complete renovation was carried out in the early 2000’s and Dom Mladih re-opened in February 2007.
Today, Dom Mladih’s lower level has an amphitheater that can accommodate about 600 visitors and the dance hall can hold about 2, 000.
