The Museum of Pharmacy was founded in Sarajevo in July 2022 with the aim of researching, documenting, and showcasing the rich history of pharmacy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Museum of Pharmacy in Sarajevo represents and promotes a unique cultural and scientific point that combines the rich history of medicine, pharmacy, and healing traditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through a permanent exhibition and thematic displays.
The museum's exhibition takes you through different periods – from the Ottoman period and traditional pharmacies (aktar/atar) that prepared herbal medicines and preparations, through the Austro-Hungarian period when modern pharmacy practices and standards were introduced, up to contemporary pharmacy.
The museum displays original pharmacy furniture, old containers for storing medicines (glass, porcelain, and wooden jars), hand scales, mechanisms for crushing and mixing herbs, equipment for making pills and ointments, as well as handwritten prescriptions and old professional books.
Special emphasis is placed on the use of medicinal herbs from Bosnia and Herzegovina and traditional recipes that have been used in folk medicine for centuries.
The space is arranged to provide visitors with an authentic feeling of entering an old pharmacy, combining educational panels, visual exhibits, and a narrative about the development of health culture in this region.
