Collegium Artisticum first opened on April 6, 1975, on the 30th Anniversary of Sarajevo’s liberation during WWII, and is now an organizational unit of Sarajevo Canton’s JU Center for Culture.
The gallery takes its name from the progressive cultural-artistic movement which was founded by left-oriented artists (Vojo Dimitrijević, Oskar Danon, Jahiel Finci...) in 1939, right before the Second World War. Due to its anti-fascist views, the movement was soon banned by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Over the past four decades, more than 1, 000 exhibits have been held at Collegium Artisticum. All of the major artists from BiH and former Yugoslavia have been shown here, and the gallery’s Grand Prix, an event held on Collegium Artisticum’s own anniversary when it gives the April 6th Award, is considered one of the most prestigious awards of its kind in the region.
The gallery comprises three artistic associations: ULUBiH (BiH Association of Artists), ULUPUBiH (BiH Association of Applied Arts and Design) and AABiH (BiH Association of Architects).
