Utopia

Utopia is performed on Friday, 9 October 2026, at the Sarajevo Youth Theatre, starting at 18:00, as part of the mali MESS programme. Recommended for ages 12+.

Utopia is about the meaning of art – in the life of an individual, a family, a nation and a civilisation. It metaphorically stages the collapse of one civilisation and the rise of another in which art is unwelcome, offering a dystopian picture of a world without it. Its particular strength is that it makes its case through visual art, music, acting and puppetry all at once.

The story follows a family of painters and their youngest member, Marta, who learns from schoolmates that her family has been hiding her father’s disappearance and sets off to find him in a country where art is banned.

Written and directed by Vanja Jovanović, with Marta Haubrich, Tibor Oreč, Ivan Nevjestić and Anela Planinić Škutor / Jadranka Popović-Miljko. Produced by Mostar Puppet Theatre. Running time: 50 minutes.

Admission to mali MESS is free; tickets are collected at the MESS Festival offices (Maršala Tita 54) from 28 September, daily 10:00–18:00.
