Sutjeska National park is an absolute highlight for hikers and nature lovers. There are fantastic hiking options in the park (Maglič, Trnačkovo, Zelengora, Volujak and many others, see www.sutjeskanp.com), including sections of the excellent but demanding Via Dinarica (www.viadinarica.com) for which you find lots of helpful information on their websites. For the historical background of the region, see the impressive monument and memorial site in Tsentište commemorating the Partizan war, right next to the main road and the Sutjeska park info center. While the museum was closed at the time of writing (Sept 2026), the commemorative site with very graphic frescoes depicting the horror and suffering in the region under German occupation was luckily accessible. For a more comprehensive picture, don‘t miss the Museum of Old Hercegovina in nearby Foča (www.muzejfoca.com) c. 25 km north of the memorial which has four exhibitions on two floors, covering the Partizan war in WW II and the Bosnian war 1992-95 in the region (related to exhibitions in other parts of the country but complementing these with a local perspective) and containing a fine ethnographic exhibition as well as one on a local notable. Note that the museum closes at 3 pm although I understand that scheduled visits can be arranged off-hour. We were lucky to meet with the curator who went out of her way to give more information and additional background. Thank you once again for this! The area combines beautiful nature with a lot of history and riveting cultural richness - not speaking of the culinary delights such as the fantastic trout from the Tara, Piva and Drina rivers 🙂! Go for it, you will not regret it!
