Istočno Sarajevo (East Sarajevo) is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the Republika Srpska entity. It was formed after the Bosnian War of 1992-1995, when Sarajevo was divided into different ethnic and administrative districts. As a result of this division, the city is located east of Sarajevo, which is part of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and forms a neighboring administrative region. Istočno Sarajevo, as a city composed of different districts, encompasses municipalities such as Pale, Sokolac, Istočno Novo Sarajevo, and Istočna Ilidža. While benefiting from Sarajevo's cultural, commercial, and educational opportunities, the city also distinguishes itself with its own local administration and identity. For example, it is home to the University of East Sarajevo, numerous local administrative offices, shopping centers, and residential areas. The city is notable for both its historical and natural beauty. Istočno Sarajevo is quite close to Mount Jahorina and popular ski resorts, making it a significant destination for winter sports tourism. Jahorina, a ski resort that hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, attracts numerous domestic and international tourists every year. While Istočno Sarajevo still bears the scars of the war in Bosnia, it is now part of efforts towards peaceful coexistence. Cooperation and social relations between the two districts of Sarajevo are also steadily strengthening.
